Full Itinerary for Oman Cultural Adventure

Day 1: Fly into Muscat, city tour

Wander among the labyrinthine market stalls of Mutrah Souq, visit Bait al-Baranda Museum for a historical and cultural insight into the country as well as the breath-taking Grand Mosque – a modern masterpiece of Islamic architecture.

Day 2: Drive to Wadi Shab & Ras Al Jins

After stopping off at Bimmah Sinkhole we will visit Wadi [‘valley’ in Arabic] Shab; one of the county’s finest, and after a short boat ride in we will explore its lush interior and can swim in the fresh water. We then drive on to Sur to see the Dhow boat yard before staying the night at Ras Al Jins (May & Oct / Nov departures only) to see the green turtles’ nesting sites in the evening , as they don’t come out during the day. Our December departure sees us explore beautiful Sur, a photographers paradise, in more depth, staying for the evening and night.

Day 3: Wadi Bani Khalid & Wahiba sands desert camp

After breakfast we will head to Wadi Bani Khalid to walk along and swim in its fresh green water pools. We can walk further up the wadi to explore the year-round waters and enjoy this very relaxing place of natural beauty. After a short drive to Wahiba sands we settle in to our desert camp for sunset on the dunes.

Day 4: Wahiba Sands & Nizwa

Watch the sunrise over picture-perfect untouched sand dunes which stretch for as far as the eye can see! We can take a camel ride and/or a small trek in this beautiful wilderness. We then drive to the beautiful town of Nizwa for a relaxing dinner.

Day 5: Nizwa & Jebel Shams

In the morning we will visit Nizwa’s traditional souq to hunt out some bargains as well as explore its huge and historic fort. We will drive up the steep winding roads to Jebel Shams [Mountains of the sun] to stay at the Jebel Shams Resort (2hr drive).

Day 6: Jebel Shams & Misfat Al Abyreen

We can take a short radial walk along the famous ‘balcony walk’ to get some of the best views of the incredible canyon. This afternoon is a wonderful opportunity to explore a stunning and remote mountain village: Misfat Al Abryeen.  Set overlooking date plantations, the village is a fantastic place to relax and unwind, walking through beautiful gardens and taking the time to wander the historic streets.

Day 7: Snake Canyon, Bilad Sait & Muscat

Any reluctance on leaving the serenity of Misfat behind us will be blown away as we explore another stunning canyon today: Wadi Bani Auf, aka Snake Canyon (2hrs 15 drive).  The journey, via Al Hamra, is one of the most famous off-roading drives in the country.  This afternoon we visit and walk around Bilad Sait, another tranquil traditional hamlet tucked away in the mountains, that has lost none of its charm. We will meet the inhabitants for coffee and dates as well as a visit to a local home before heading back to the capital for a group meal.

Day 8: Boat tour to the Daymaniyat Islands

The Daymaniyat Islands are the jewels of Oman, a protected group of nine islands, abundant with marine and bird life. The islands with their crystal clear waters invite you to snorkel among the most beautiful corals and colourful fish you can find in the Middle East.

Day 9: Fly out of Muscat

Oman is one of the best kept secrets of the Middle East: Safe, relaxed, sleepy even, the small country that neighbours the oft-visited UAE is consistently overlooked by tourists, and we like it this way. The Omani people are probably the friendliest people in the Gulf, and their country remains untouched in its pristine, rugged natural beauty.  If you are looking for a unique experience, in a safe environment with stunning scenery, with as much flavour as the local smoky coffee served with dates, Oman is the perfect escape.

An added bonus of this adventure is that you get to experience the other-worldly and remote Daymaniyat Islands, surrounded by coral reefs. Protected as a nature reserve since 1996, the islands provide an important nesting site for green turtles and a wide range of migratory birds including the increasingly rare sooty falcon. You will have the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal waters amidst the many species of multi-coloured fish, or alternatively you can just enjoy the boat ride, far from home on the salty sea.
